The natural aging process can affect you in several ways. Physically, your skin loses elasticity, which may lead to wrinkles and sagging.
Your hair might turn gray and thin out. These changes, caused by the natural aging process, might lead to anxiety about your appearance and, sometimes, even your health.
Dr Bernard Tan, a practicing Medical Aesthetics and hair Restoration specialist in Singapore, answers some of the most common questions you may have about an aging face. He also discusses which facial rejuvenation treatments may help or be ideal for you. Keep reading!
What are the Signs of Aging in the Face?
Signs of aging in the face vary considerably. However, there are several common indicators that highlight the loss of firmness and elasticity.
For example, a youthful face will display specific characteristics, which can include;
- A defined neck and jawline
- Firm skin
- High brows
- Short eyelids, and
- An egg-like shape
Dr Bernard Tan explains that aging typically starts around the eyes, where the skin is thinnest. When it begins, you may start to notice signs of aging on the face like;
- Dark circles
- Under-eye hollows and
- A sunken appearance
Other signs of aging you may experience on the face include puffiness, drooping eyelids, and fine wrinkles (crow’s feet). As the fat in the face moves downward, you may notice your cheeks, nose, and jawline beginning to appear droopy.
Wrinkles, lines, and folds, especially deep frown lines around the lips, are common. The fat around the jaw and neck descends, creating “jowls.”
Other signs include changes in facial contour, with the lower part of the face becoming wider and squarer, explains Dr. Bernard Tan. Dull skin texture, larger pores, and less defined features also start becoming noticeable. You may also notice pigment changes like skin discoloration.
Can you Reverse Skin Aging?
If you’re worried about saggy or loose skin, you are not alone. Sagging and loose skin are aging changes that are a common concern for many people, thus the frequently asked question: Can you reverse skin aging?
The simple answer is no; you cannot reverse skin aging signs completely. However, as Dr Bernard Tan explains, “You could use several treatment options to firm up your skin as it ages.” If you’re looking for quicker results, here are some cosmetic procedures you may be recommended;
1. Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are a popular, minimally invasive treatment for improving skin texture. They work by removing damaged cells from the epidermis to enhance or reduce fine lines, among other benefits.
This procedure can be applied to the face, neck, and hands. There are three types of chemical peels:
- Light Peels: These target the outer layer of the skin and are often used for mild skin imperfections. Recovery is quick, and treatments can be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks for optimal results.
- Medium Peels: These penetrate deeper to treat wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tone. Recovery may take longer, and treatments are usually spaced several months apart.
- Deep Peels: These offer the most dramatic results by reaching the deeper layers of the skin. They require a more extended recovery period and are usually a one-time treatment.
2. Ultrasound Skin Tightening
Ultrasound skin tightening is an advanced treatment that uses ultrasound waves to generate heat within the deeper layers of the skin. This process stimulates collagen production to give your skin a firmer and smoother texture.
You can see a noticeable lift right after the procedure. However, the best results appear over 3 to 6 months.
The best part about this cosmetic treatment is that there is no downtime. This means that you can immediately return to your daily activities. It may be recommended if you’re looking for a substantial lift without surgery.
3. Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is a highly effective in tightening skin by using either carbon dioxide (CO2) or erbium lasers. CO2 lasers are used for deeper issues like scars, warts, and wrinkles.
Erbium lasers, on the other hand, address more superficial concerns like fine lines. Both types of lasers focus on the epidermis to improve texture and firmness.
4. Thermage
Thermage uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to tighten skin with little to no downtime. It is suitable for all skin tones and types.
It can be used on both the face and body and the results are subtle and natural. Thermage also allows you to resume normal activities right away. It may be specifically recommended for you if you have a busy schedule.
5. Fillers
Facial fillers are primarily used to restore volume and lift sagging skin. They can be applied to various areas, including the cheeks, chin, jawline, temples, lips, and hands.
Fillers tackle issues of skin elasticity, volume loss, and facial lines. The treatment is also relatively quick and requires minimal downtime.
6. Threads
Thread lifts provide a subtle, natural-looking lift using absorbable sutures to hold up loose skin. The threads work by triggering collagen production to enhance skin elasticity and firmness.
This procedure is less invasive than traditional facelifts and guarantees a quicker recovery time. The mono or poly threads used in this procedure are inserted under the skin, lifting and tightening it while promoting long-term skin health and vibrancy.
How can I keep my Face glowing and Younger?
While aging is a natural process, its emotional impact can be massive, which explains why many people ask: how can I keep my face glowing and younger?
To keep your face glowing and younger, “first ensure that you protect your skin from the sun,” advises Dr. Bernard. “Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days.”
“Also, consider using self-tanner instead of sunbathing,” Dr. Bernard Tan suggests. This is particularly important as prolonged sun exposure accelerates skin aging and increases the risk of skin cancer.
“Stop smoking,” emphasizes Dr. Bernard Tan. Smoking narrows blood vessels and depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients, which may lead to premature wrinkles.” Other than stopping smoking, only use mild cleansers and avoid harsh scrubbing, which can irritate and damage the skin. Moisturize regularly to keep your skin hydrated.
Importantly, avoid repetitive facial expressions. “Frequent movements like squinting can cause fine lines,” Dr. Bernard notes. You may want to start wearing sunglasses, which can reduce the need to squint.
Keeping in mind that alcohol dehydrates the skin and can make you look older; Dr. Bernard recommends significantly limiting alcohol intake if you struggle to stop. It would, however, be best to seek professional help to cease alcohol consumption if you struggle with controlling how much you drink.
The Bottom Line
Aging may be a natural process, but it just doesn’t seem right letting the physical changes that come with it rob you of your confidence and charm. Most changes can be slowed down or controlled, so don’t shy away from seeking help.
