How to Double Your OSRS Gold With Sailing Investment

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is no stranger to savvy players finding opportunities to turn small investments into massive profits. With the upcoming release of Sailing, a new gold-making strategy has emerged—one that could turn a modest stack of OSRS gold into a fortune if executed correctly. In this guide, we’ll explore how to flip items on the Grand Exchange, which items to avoid, and where the real opportunity lies.

    Items You Should Absolutely Avoid

Before diving into the gold-making strategy, let’s discuss the items you should never invest in:

    1. Bronze and Iron Nails – Common, cheap items available from any general store. While it might seem tempting to stockpile millions, their resale value is minimal, and flipping them for profit is virtually impossible. Even ultimate ironmen holding millions of bronze nails won’t profit by selling them.
    2. Black Nails – These have recently become a speculative trap, bouncing up and down in price with no real in-game utility. Buying black nails is essentially like investing in a “shitcoin”: unpredictable and likely to leave you holding worthless items. Avoid at all costs.
    3. Normal and Oak Planks – Like low-tier nails, planks are mostly a training resource. Their prices won’t spike in response to Sailing, making them a poor investment.

In short, avoid low-budget items unless your intention is purely skilling or personal use.

The Mid-Tier Market: Steel, Mithril, and Adamant Bars

There is a window of opportunity for mid-tier metal bars like steel, mithril, and adamant. These materials have been rising in value due to the upcoming Sailing update, but timing is crucial:

    • Steel and Mithril Bars – Demand spikes for these will come from players maintaining their ships with repair kits. While they’re plateauing now, they are likely to hold value longer than usual as players race to level Sailing quickly.
    • Adamant Bars – These are currently affordable (~2k GP per bar) and have seen recent profit spikes. If the meta favours high-level boats requiring adamant, the demand for these bars could return strongly, making them a viable secondary investment.

While investing in these items carries moderate risk, they are safer than low-tier items and could supplement your bigger investment strategy.

    The Big Opportunity: Sawmill Vouchers

Here’s where the real money lies: sawmill vouchers. This is my primary investment strategy, and it’s based on legitimate in-game mechanics:

    • What Are Sawmill Vouchers?

Sawmill vouchers allow players to convert logs into planks faster. For example, they can effectively double the output when processing mahogany logs. Historically, vouchers have always had resale value higher than their raw plank costs.

    • Why They’re Profitable With Sailing

With the introduction of Sailing, there will be a surge in demand for high-level boats, which require repair kits and planks. Players racing for world-first achievements, front page high scores, and 200M XP milestones will prioritise efficiency over cost. Using plank-making tools is slow, whereas sawmill vouchers provide speed—creating a direct demand spike.

    Current Investment Numbers

    • 10,000 sawmill vouchers purchased at 4,300–4,700 GP each.
    • Listed for sale between 7,500–8,000 GP each.
    • Estimated return (including leftover adamant bars) exceeds 1.5 billion GP, potentially doubling the initial investment.
    • Long-Term Outlook

With new logs such as rosewood entering the game, the cost of planks will rise. One rosewood plank costs ~7,500 GP, making sawmill vouchers an essential item for any serious Sailing player. Historical trends indicate vouchers will likely surpass 7,500 GP and may even climb higher.

The Psychology of OSRS Market Players

Part of this strategy’s effectiveness relies on understanding player behaviour: Competitive players racing to world-first Sailing achievements will pay a premium for speed. Content creators may also invest heavily to produce early-game videos. Even non-content creators who aim for front-page high scores are likely to spend heavily on efficient resources.

This combination of competition and impatience drives demand and ensures that vouchers will rise in value.

    Final Thoughts

Investing in OSRS is never without risk, but with careful planning and timing, the Sailing release presents a once-in-a-season opportunity. Keep an eye on the market, adjust listings as demand rises, and leverage the competitive Sailing community to maximise profits.
